Smoothie Time

Smoothies have been my favorite breakfast go to for quite some time. A dear friend of mine gifted me a beautiful blender about seven years ago, and I think I’ve had a smoothie for breakfast everyday since. I used to make mostly fruit smoothies, incorporating flax seeds and silken tofu for extra protein and fiber punches. Now I mostly make green smoothies, packing iron and calcium on the form of leafy greens in with fruit, fresh herbs, and usually avocado to make the smoothie creamy, thick, and satisfying. If you’re craving something more rich, you can even combine banana with peanut butter, cocoa, and almond milk for a milkshake-esque protein and fiber packed breakfast.

Regardless of the type of smoothie you go with, they are an excellent, filling way to hydrate and get your metabolism going so you can rock your day.

Right now is an excellent time to stock up on local fruit, freeze it, and use it in smoothies all winter. Last summer I froze peaches, blueberries, and cantaloupe. I didn’t run entirely out of local fruit until the beginning of March.

Here are a few of my fave smoothies. I like to make a double batch at a time and store the extra smoothie in a mason jar or a milk frother so I can just grab it and head out the door in the morning.

Silken Tofu Breakfast Smoothie:

  •         1 banana
  •        1 ½ cups local cantaloupe
  •        1 cup seasonal fruit or berries
  •        ½ cup silken tofu
  •         1 Tbs agave nectar
  •         1 Tbs brown flax seeds
  •         Cover with almond milk or soy milk (about 1 cup)

Blend on high until smooth and creamy.  Especially yummy and rich with bananas and maple syrup instead of agave!

Local Fruit Smoothie:

  •         3 cups frozen Michigan fruit
  •         Enough unsweetened almond milk to cover fruit (about 2 ½ C)
  •         2 tablespoons milled flax seed or whole chia seeds
  •         2 tablespoons hemp protein powder (optional)
  •         3 tablespoons fresh orange juice

Place fruit in a blender.  Cover with almond milk (or your favorite unsweetened plant-based milk).  Add remaining ingredients.  Blend on low for about 90 seconds.  Stir, then blend on high for another 2-3 minutes or until smooth and drinkable.  Enjoy!

Avocado Dream Smoothie:

  • ½ cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 banana
  • 4 leaves romaine lettuce
  • 1 ½ cups kale
  • 1 avocado
  • 2 oranges
  • 1 cup sweet fruit of your choice (peaches or other seasonal)
  • Juice of 2 oranges

Tear greens and cut fruit into 1 inch pieces. Place all ingredients in a blender and fill halfway with water. Blend on high until smooth and creamy.
